New publication on the design, simulation and fabrication of a ringresonator biosensor assisted by dielectrophoresis.

The in JLB running DFG-funded project MRR-DEP aims to improve the detection limit of photonic biosensors that function as microring resonators (MRR) by combining them with dielectrophoresis (DEP). By applying this force in MRR sensors, we aim to move the desired analytes in the solution towards the sensor surface, thereby increasing the diffusion rate and kinetics of the sensor. The chip design, including two different electrode configurations, electric field gradient simulations and the fabrication process flow of a dielectrohoresis-enhanced microring resonator-based sensor, is presented in this paper.

New publication on the separation of microalgae by dielectrophoresis

A few days ago, a review paper of the Joint Lab Bioelectronics was published in the Open Access Journal Microorganisms. The paper provides an overview of the studies carried out to date on microalgae that have been separated in microfluidic lab-on-chip systems using the method of dielectrophoresis or have been subjected to other processes such as lysis. The result shows that DEP has been successfully used in all studies so far and represents a promising approach in the biotechnology of microalgae.The publication can be viewed via the following link:

Separation of microalgae - Poster contribution Microsystems Technology Congress 2019

Microalgae are producers of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are becoming more and more important for biofuel production, in the development of pharmaceuticals or in food and feed industry. The Joint Lab Bioelectronics team is developing a lab-on-chip system for the separation of mainly lipid-containing, adult cells by dielectrophoresis. Dielectrophoresis makes use of the polarizability of particles in inhomogeneous electric fields in order to separate them with corresponding microfluidic systems. With this contribution, the participating scientists were able to successfully apply for a poster contribution for “MikroSystemTechnik Kongress 2019”.
